The Township of Hamilton has a township committee form of government. There are five members each elected for a three year term. Normal meeting dates are on the first and third Mondays of each month, with special meetings added when necessary. The mayor is selected at the reorganization meeting in January from among the five sitting committeepersons. Each committeeperson oversees a township department: revenue and finance, planning and zoning, public works, public safety and social services. Among the issues that the committee deals with are the passing of ordinances (laws), personnel issues and responding to constituent concerns. In the beginning of each year, the committee also has to formulate an annual budget. This is usually the most difficult and time-consuming project that the committee faces each year, as the governing body attempts to meet the needs of an ever-growing community while trying to maintain the lowest possible tax rate. While the township committee serves as the governing body, a township administrator serves the residents on a daily basis, and provides a link between the residents and the governing body. |
